Ajax / Pickering - Ontario
Many people who worked or lived in Ajax wanted to remain here. Ajax became a planned modern community using the wartime base for its post-war foundation. Industry and people came from everywhere to take advantage of the many assets of Ajax - its schools, its churches, its hospital, its steam plant, its comprehensive planning, its geography - close to Toronto but setting a separate pace - and its friendly, industrious, involved citizens.

The history of Ajax is everywhere as most of the streets in Ajax are named after the crew and officers of the HMS Ajax. The main street, Harwood Ave., is named for Commodore Henry H. Harwood, commander of HMS Ajax, HMS Exeter and HMS Achilles. On some streets you can find a tree dedicated to the veteran after whom it is named.

Welcome to the City of Pickering, a vibrant and growing community in Durham Region. Located just 40 kilometres east of downtown Toronto, Pickering offers a unique blend of the urban and rural. The historically designated village of Whitevale and picturesque villages of Greenwood, Cherrywood, Claremont and Brougham in north Pickering reflect the pastoral qualities of the area while being only minutes away from a wide array of shopping, entertainment and dining choices.
Situated on the shores of Lake Ontario, Pickering continues to be a waterfront refuge for those wanting to escape city life. From east or west, come to Pickering by taking a leisurely drive along the old Heritage Highway (Highway 2), Ontario's historic route. Pickering is also directly accessible via Highway 401 in the south and by the newly expanded Highway 407 in the north. Visitors are also welcome by boat, or by public transit.
